CBD Drug Interactions

There are certain drugs that interact with CBD cannabidiol, these interactions usually include drugs that are metabolized by CYP450 enzymes and may interact with CBD.

The Israeli Pharmacy Association published a position paper detailing the side effects of taking cannabis with other medications. The organization described two types of conflicts with drugs: pharmacokinetic interactions: when the drug and cannabis both act on the same mechanism and interfere with each other, and pharmacodynamic interactions: when cannabis and the drug work in a similar way – for example, when they both depress the central nervous system – so that the combination of cannabis With the drug leads to overactivity or underactivity of the cannabis.

The report details the types of drugs that conflict with cannabis, including drugs for: cancer, epilepsy, lung diseases, Parkinson’s, eye diseases, infectious diseases, arthritis, pain relief, anxiety and depression, heart disease and stroke.

The Indiana University Department of Medicine reports that drugs known to use the CYP450 system include:

HIV antivirals ᛫ Immune modulators ᛫ Benzodiazepines ᛫ Steroids ᛫ Anti-epileptics ᛫ Beta blockers ᛫ PPIs ᛫ Antidepressants ᛫ NSAIDs ᛫ Angiotension II blockers ᛫ Oral hypoglycemic agents ᛫ Sulfonylureas ᛫ HMG CoA reductase inhibitors ᛫ Calcium channel blockers ᛫ Antihistamines ᛫ Prokinetics ᛫ Anti-arrythmics Antibiotics ᛫ Anesthetics ᛫ Anti-psychotics

The drugs that interact with CBD are not limited to the above drugs. It is recommended that anyone considering using CBD should first consult a doctor or medical professional.

Antibiotics and medicines – how do we know what to watch out for? One of the simplest ways to know which drugs should not be consumed together with CBD is-

the grapefruit test:

Grapefruit has chemicals that inhibit the metabolism of drugs in a similar way to the action of CBD on drugs. A warning against concurrent use with eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice exists on many medications including: antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, antihistamines, anti-epileptic drugs, blood pressure drugs, blood thinners, anti-cholesterol drugs, steroids, erectile dysfunction drugs, immunosuppressive drugs and more . The dose of cannabidiol, the way it is consumed and the age also have an effect on a collision with drugs – a high dose of CBD, older age and CBD products that are consumed by ingestion and pass through the bloodstream, all of these have a higher chance of causing a collision with drugs. Therefore, the recommendation for those who take medication and wish to use CBD is to consult a doctor before use. When you talk to your doctor, your doctor may not know about CBD, so another safe option when discussing CBD use is to ask if any of your medications can interact with grapefruit.
